Australian universities have dumped former favourite the USA, and decided that China is the best place for student and staff exchange and collaborative research.

The USA has consistently been Australia's number one 'knowledge partner' since 1990 in frequent audits by Universities Australia.

However, three years after China became Australia's number one trading partner, it now holds more formal partnerships with Chinese universities than any other country, the Herald Sun reports.

According to the report, universities Australia chief executive Belinda Robinson said the shift meant universities had decided to capitalise on the opportunities in Asia.

He said that the value of such relationships were 'enormous' for productivity, trade, foreign relations and cultural understanding.

"What we are talking about here is not selling finite resources, but generating infinite knowledge," Robinson said.

The news follows the Federal Government's Asian White Paper, which called for greater education ties between Australia and the growing powerhouse in coming decades, the report said. (ANI)
