[Pakistan], Jan 14 (ANI): Upholding Islamabad High Court (IHC) verdict, Pakistan Supreme Court on Monday ordered the suspension of prison sentences awarded to former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz in Avenfield reference case.

IHC, in September 2018, had annulled prison time of Sharifs awarded to them by an accountability court in the case.

Reiterating that the IHC had not exceeded its authority in granting bail to the father-daughter duo convicted in the Avenfield reference, the five-member bench, in its ruling, stated that the plea filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against IHC's bail order, had failed to provide the "ground for cancellation of bail", reported Dawn.

In July 2018, the accountability court had sentenced Nawaz to 10 years in jail for owning assets beyond known income and one year for not cooperating with NAB.

However, in Al-Azizia Steel Mills case, the accountability court on December 26 sentenced Nawaz Sharif to seven years in jail and his all assets were also frozen. (ANI)
