Chennai: Best-selling author and social commentator Shobhaa De is set to turn publisher, joining hands with Penguin India.
She will acquire a new line of books with her own imprint, Shobhaa De Books.
Shobhaa De Books will comprise celebrity memoirs, guidebooks and biographies— with a focus on lifestyle, business and cinema—and on cutting-edge commercial fiction. The first of the books will appear in early 2011.
With this, Penguin also becomes the first publisher in India with an exclusive imprint for commercial publishing, and also the first international publishing house with an editorial presence in Mumbai.
Mumbai remains extremely vulnerable: Shobhaa De
Announcing the launch of the imprint, Penguin Group's Global CEO John Makinson said, "We are proud to be associating our name with Shobhaa's, whose bravery, imagination and integrity have inspired all of us over the years, and continue to do so even today."
Reiterating Makinson’s sentiments, Ravi Singh, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher, Penguin India, said: "We're all hugely excited by this coming together of two of the biggest brands in books and writing.”
Shobhaa De said, “Getting one’s own imprint is perhaps the biggest ‘high’ for any writer. Turning publisher will provide opportunities to discover fresh, energetic, new voices that reflect contemporary concerns and say things in an original, exciting and unique way. I am raring to go!”
