Islamabad, Jan 28 (IANS) The airport in Pakistan's Peshawar city has been renamed after noted freedom fighter Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan.

As a tribute to the Pashtun political and spiritual leader, the provincial authorities renamed the airport as "Bacha Khan International Airport", the Daily Times reported.

A close follower of Mahatma Gandhi, Khan was popularly known as Fakhri Afghan, Badshah Khan or Bacha Khan and Sarhaddi Gandhi.

Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan had strongly opposed the formation of Pakistan. In 1987, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan was the father of Awami National Party (ANP) founder Abdul Wali Khan. ANP president Asfandyar Wali Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti were present at the renaming ceremony held at the airport.
