PM meets Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi

Chennai, Dec 26 (IBNS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday morning met Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Karunanidhi and her daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi at the Raj Bhavan here over the Mullaperiyar Dam row between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The meeting of the Prime Minister with the DMK top leader, who went to meet Singh at the Raj Bhavan with Kanimozhi, who recently was released on bail in the 2G scam, followed the PM´s meeting with Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday over the issue.

The PM is on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu and would attend on Monday the 125th birth anniversary function of the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Jayalalithaa presented a Memorandum on various important issues of the state to the Prime Minister during their meeting.

Reports said during his meeting with the CM, the latter urged the PM to reason with Kerala on not building a new dam across Mullaperiyar.

There was, however, no reference of the controversial Kudankulam nuclear plant that is roiling the state and triggered a strong agitation by the local people demanding the India-Russia project´s scrapping.

Besides Mullaperiyar dam, the CM raised issues like National Food Security Bill, protection of the Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay and a special financial package for Tamil Nadu.
