PM to meet President on numbers: Reports

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday will meet President Pranab Mukherjee to assure him that his United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is safe on numbers, media reports said.

"A day after Mamata Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress, formally pulled out of the UPA, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to meet President Pranab Mukherjee to assure him that his government is safe on numbers," NDTV reported.

"The meeting is likely to take place at 5 this evening," it said.

The meeting will take place a day after the UPA government was reduced to a minority formally on Friday after six Trinamool Congress (TMC) ministers in the government tendered their resignations, capping days of high voltage politics after the PM announced his big ticket economic reforms.

TMC with 19 MPs was UPA´s second biggest constituent and the biggest ally of the Congress party which spearheads the government.

The UPA government now enjoys the support of SP of Mulayam Singh Yadav (22 MPs) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of Mayawati with 21 MPs.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata on Tuesday had announced to withdrew support to the UPA over its recent economic reforms, FDI in multi-brand retail, hike in diesel price and cap on subsidy in LPG cylinders.

The big ticket liberalisation measures came just a day after the government raised the price of diesel by Rs 5 per litre and restricted the number of subsidised LPG cylinders sold to households at six per year.
