Pandemonium erupted here during the funeral of former Cabinet Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, forcing police to launch a baton charge on the unruly mob on Wednesday.

The baton charge was necessary to clear the mob from the funeral site.

Deshmukh died at the age of 67, on Tuesday after battling a liver disorder for several days.

Deshmukh died in a Chennai hospital, where he was shifted from Mumbai earlier in August for a possible liver transplant.

However, their attempt failed as the donor was declared brain dead before the operation could be carried out for the transplant.

Born in Babhalgaon in Maharashtra's Latur district, Deshmukh joined the Congress in the late 1970s and won successive state assembly elections over the next decade.

Deshmukh was chief minister of Maharashtra twice and resigned soon after the 2008 Mumbai attacks over charges that his state government had failed to prevent the three-day carnage that cost 166 lives.

Deshmukh later entered the upper house of the parliament and became a minister in the union cabinet, heading the ministry for heavy industries and public enterprises.

he politician is survived by his wife and three sons, including a Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh.(ANI)
