"Sikkim has recorded the steepest fall in poverty level in the country from 2004-05 to 2011-12 on account of increase in per capita consumption and the proportion of the poor living below poverty line in the urban area of the state is lowest among all the states of the country," according to an official statement of the Sikkim government released here.

Referring to the Planning Commission data, the statement said, the number of people below poverty line in Sikkim has come down from 170,000 in 2004-05 to 80,000 in 2009-10 and and it declined further to 51,000 in 2011-12.
