President Pranab Mukherjee has rejected the mercy pleas of four associates of slain notorious sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, media reports said on Wednesday.

"The four accused whose mercy pleas have been rejected are Gnanprakasham, Simon, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilavendran," CNN-IBN reported.

In 2004, the Supreme Court had awarded death sentence to the four associates of Veerappan in connection to the killing of 21 policemen in a landmine blast in Karnataka in 1993.

A Mysore court had earlier awarded life term to them.

Appealing against the life term, the Karnataka government had moved the Supreme Court and filed a petition.

They filed the mercy pleas in 2004.

Mukherjee recently rejected the mercy plea of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru who was hanged at Delhi´s Tihar Jail on Saturday.

Guru´s execution was initially scheduled for Oct 20, 2006. But it was stayed after Guru´s wife filed a mercy petition with the President.
