Allahabad: Allahabad is getting ready to host the revered Maha Kumbh Mela. Devotees have begun undertaking the traditional "Shobha Yatras" in the run-up to religious event.
Over 10 million people are expected to arrive in the city to participate in the event.
On Friday, devotees danced and escorted several tableaux through the streets.
"The Kumbh fair has started through the medium of 'Shobha Yatra' procession and we just wish that all men and women to come here and pay their obeisance to god, and this procession has been carried out to call God under the leadership of Swami Gopal, who is a head of Sacha baba Ashram," said Raju, a devotee.
The Kumbh Mela takes place in mid January when the Sun traverses across the Tropic of Cancer Tropic of Cancer, parallel of latitude at 23030' north of the equator; it is the northern boundary of the tropics.
Kumbh Mela will be held from January 14 (Makarsankranti) to March 10 (Vaisakh Aadhimaas Purnima, Hindu calendar).
Held in every twelve years and rotating among Allahabad, Nasik, Haridwar, and Ujjain, the Mela takes place when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and Sun enters Aries, according to the Hindu Lunar calendar.
