The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday said President Pranab Mukherjee will continue with his official visit to Bangladesh, and added that the situation is normal with nobody injured following the explosion that took place near the hotel in Dhaka where he is staying.

MEA official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin assured that everything is normal in front of the hotel where President Mukherjee is staying on his official visit to Bangladesh.

"A couple of hours ago we were informed by the Bangladesh police that there was an explosion, which according to local police authorities was on account of what they called crude cocktail. And however, none of those who were inside the hotel, including the President, heard of this explosion or were in any way affected," said Akbaruddin.

"The President is continuing with his programme. He has since then had several calls where our prominent Bangladeshis have come and met him. And this evening later, he is expected to continue with his programme and go for a banquet hosted by the President of Bangladesh for him. So, let me assure you that everything is normal and the visit will continue as normal," he added.

DCP of Dhaka, Chowdhury Monzurul Kabir, said it was a minor explosion that took place near the Indian President's hotel, and that there is nothing to worry.

"You know some people have called hartal and they are trying to enforce hartal. And as a part of this, that means to enforce the hartal they sometimes explode some crackers. And today around 2 'o' clock they exploded some type of small crackers near Sonargaon hotel and it is very simple crackers and nothing to be worried here," he said.

A bomb exploded this afternoon in front of the hotel in Dhaka where President Mukherjee is staying on his official visit to Bangladesh.

Nobody was, however, injured in the incident.

President Mukherjee was in his suite at the Sonargaon Pan-Pacific hotel in Dhaka when the explosion took place nearly half a kilometre away.

The incident took place on the second day of the 48-hour strike called by Jamaat-e-Islami party against the sentencing of three of its top leaders in 1971 war crimes cases. (ANI)
