Agartala, April 6 (IANS) The Tripura government has ordered a magisterial probe into the assault on at least 11 scribes by junior doctors and medical students at medical college and hospital here, officials said Saturday.

"The decision for the magisterial inquiry was taken after Chief Minister Manik Sarkar had a meeting with his ministerial colleagues and senior officials Friday night," an official told reporters.

Several media organisations have announced protest against the incident.

"Some medical students and junior doctors attacked the annoyed relatives of a dead patient at the Gobinda Ballav Pant Medical College and Hospital. When the journalists tried to take pictures, they were assaulted," Ramakanta Dey, a senior photo journalist said.

Dey, who was also injured and hospitalised, said: "Medical students armed with sticks came out of their hostels. At least 11 journalists were seriously injured. Their cameras and vehicles were damaged by the students."

Representatives of journalist organisations met Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty and Information Minister Bhanulal Saha, and demanded stern action against the students and doctors involved in the incident.

The Agartala Press Club and various media groups have condemned the incident.

Additional security forces have been deployed in and around the medical college and outskirts of Agartala.
