Chandigarh, July 23 (IANS) The Punjab government Monday said strict action would be taken against educational institutions not adopting Punjabi as a compulsory language for teaching and official work.

A spokesman of the state's education and languages department said the warning was for educational institutions, especially schools, that were deliberately violating proper implementation of Punjabi language as required under two promulgated legislations.

The official said some privately-managed schools across Punjab were not implementing the Punjabi language as a compulsory subject from Class 1 to Class 10 under the Punjab, Punjabi and Learning of Other Languages Act, 2008.

Besides this, the schools were also found flouting the Punjabi Language Act, 2008, by avoiding the use of Punjabi in their official work, the official said.

The erring institutions have been given 15 days to implement the orders.
