Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal was removed from his position on Friday after he was sucked in a promotion for money scam in the ministry in which his own nephew was caught accepting bribe by the CBI red-handed, media reports said.

After Congress chief Sonia Gandhi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier in the day it was clear that Bansal will get the boot.

Reports said Bansal put in his papers after the Sonia Gandhi-Manmohan Singh meeting, bowing to the extreme pressure of the Opposition and explosive media reports about existence of a tape with incriminating evidence.

Bansal dealt with some files in the Rail Bhavan and then walked out refusing to answer the queries of hordes of journalists clamouring for his confirmation.

Bansal´s nephew Vijay Singla was arrested for accepting a Rs 90 lakh bribe in exchange for a top job on the Railways Board to senior Railway official Mahesh Kumar.

Bansal had earlier denied having any knowledge or clue about the promotion for bribe scam in the Railway that involved his own nephew.

"I have to say that I had no knowledge or clue about the matter at all. Though a close relative, he or any other relative of mine does not and cannot meddle in my official functions or influence my decisions. There is also no business relationship between his and my family," said Bansal in a statement to media on Saturday last.

"I have always observed highest standards of probity in public life and look forward to an expeditious investigation by CBI in the matter," he had said.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had raised the demand for removal of Pawan Kumar Bansal as the Railway Minister and sought clarifications from him as they produced several information before the media linking the minister to his nephew.

BJP leader Satya Pal Jain in a press conference in Chandigarh said Pawan Bansal has ties with his arrested nephew Vijay Singla how much he may deny it.

Jain alleged that Pawan Bansal's entire family of sons, wife, daughters-in-law are linked with every business of Singla and even Bansal's home address has been their official address.
