Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Saturday said that more money needs to be pumped into the railways for its maintenance and introducing better facilities, but he refused to comment on immediate fare hike.

Talking to reporters here, Bansal said the railways needs trillion of rupees to finish its projects and improve facilities and provide basic amenities.

"I cannot say anything on the railways ticket price hike before the beginning of the Budget Session. I can give details on the possibility of price hike on February 26. But, I can only say that the kind of services people need from the railways, including more lines and facilities can only be done by pumping in more money into the railways. The projects are already in the pipeline and require almost 1.5 trillion rupees," said Bansal.

The government has recently hiked the railway fares after almost a decade, which has been applicable from January 9. (ANI)
