Mumbai: Bollywood'd first superstar Rajesh Khanna's last rites were performed at Mumbai's Vile Parle crematorium on Thursday.
His funeral pyre was lit by his grandson Aarav, who was assisted by his son-in-law Akshay Kumar.
Nine-year-old Aarav is the son of Khanna's elder daughter Twinkle and actor Akshay Kumar.
Bollywood biggies, including filmmaker Karan Johar, actors Rani Mukerji, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan were present at the crematorium.
Akshay and Khanna's other son-in-law Sameer Saran looked after the funeral arrangements on Thursday.
Twinkle, who is pregnant with her second child, did not attend the event.
Hundreds of fans lined up to pay their last homage to Khanna, braving rains on Thursday, as he began his final journey from his Carter Road residence Aashirwad at around 10 am.
Fans lined the road leading up to his house as his body was carried away to the cremation ground in a hearse covered with flowers while some walked the distance to the cremation ground carrying huge posters of Khanna.
Resting in a glass coffin, the body of the superstar was accompanied by Akshay, Khanna's estranged wife Dimple Kapadia and his younger daughter Rinkie Khanna by his side atop the vehicle.
The 69-year-old actor, dubbed India's first Bollywood superstar whose popularity touched the sky in the early 1970s after he scripted a history of unbroken hits for years, died on Wednesday.
Khanna, with a romantic hero image whose winsome smile in the films of his era had women swooning over him, left behind his actor wife Dimple Kapadia and two daughters- Twinkle and Rinkie.
"I have come to inform you that my father-in-law Rajesh Khanna is no more with us," Akshay told reporters on Wednesday.
Khanna breathed his last at his Mumbai residence on Wednesday after prolonged illness. Reports said he was battling cancer.
