The Congress Party on Friday rubbished allegations levelled by the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) of trying to delay the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) polls, and said that senior politician should refrain from shooting from the air.

Giving his views on Thursday's violent clash between two Sikh groups inside the Rakabganj Gurudwara here, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (Independent Charge) Manish Tewari said: "What happened is extremely regrettable, but I think there is an investigation process going on, and all of us should wait before we jump to any conclusion."

Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal said the Shiromani Akali Dal would not tolerate any interference by the Congress in the religious affairs of Sikhs.

"I think responsible politicians, and especially senior politicians (like Badal), should refrain from the habit of shooting from the air. It is extremely unfortunate if the Chief Minister of Punjab has articulated the incident in this manner," said Tewari.

On Thursday, a violent clash between two Akali factions-the Shiromani Akali Dal, (SAD) led by Paramjit Singh Sarna and the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), besides the security staff of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), at New Delhi's Gurudwara Rakabganj, resulted in injuries to at least 11 persons, including Manjit Singh GK, the president of the Delhi unit of the SAD (Badal).

SAD (Badal) has alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the Congress want the DSGMC polls to take place only after the Delhi assembly elections in November 2013 so that Sarna can help the party retain power in the national capital for a fourth consecutive five-year-term. (ANI)
