Kolkata, Feb 16 (IBNS) Tamil Nadu's Ramkumar Ramanathan emerged new national champion as he denied Bengal's Saurav Sukul in the final of the Men's singles at the National Grass Court Tennis at South Club here on Saturday.
In the Women´s singles Ankita Raina of Gujarat won the championship defeating Goa's Natasha Palha 6-2,6-1 in the final.
In Men´s final, 4th seed Ramkumar inflicted a humiliating defeat on Saurav in 6-2, 6-1 result.
The Tamil boy looked composed and calm took his stride on green surface and whipped the opponent at every opportunity to emerge the new winners at the national championship.
Ramkumar penetrated his opponent defence easily by his forcing ground strokes as Saurav looked more and more tired as the match progressed.
Ramkumar sensed the opportunity and never took the feet of the paddle grinding Saurav by a huge margin.
In women´s singles Ankita kept on putting pressure on Natasha's serve and did not let her settle down.
Natasha though tried to come back in the second set by getting the break back but Ankita reeled a series of backhand winners to seal the second set and match 6-2, having won the first one 6-1
In the Women´s doubles, Bengal tasted success as Treta Bhattacharya partnering Goa's Natasha Palha beat top seeded pair of
Rushmi Chakravarthi and Ankita Raina, Ankita vying for a double crown started slowly but got back in the rhythm and they took the first set 6-4,
a determined Treta and Natasha fought back vigorously winning the second set 6-1.
In the decider ten point match tiebreak, it was a very close affair but the pair of Treta and Natasha won it as Ankita's backhand sailed out on the first match point for the Bengal goan pair and won it 10-8.
