The Congress has fielded Shweta Bhatt, wife of suspended Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, to contest against chief minister Narendra Modi from Maninagar assembly constituency in Ahmedabad, said reports.
The IPS officer was suspended after he took on Modi, accusing him of asking the police to go slow on Hindus during the 2002 riots that killed 1,200.
He was also arrested by Gujarat police for "trying to create evidence against Modi."
Shweta will be contesting against Modi from Maninagar, a seat from where the chief minister won by a huge margin in 2007.
Modi is looking at a third consecutive term as Gujarat chief minister.
Shweta will file her nomination papers today.
Voting will take place in Gujarat on December 13 and 17. The votes will be counted on December 20.
