Nalbari: A rhino, suspected to have been washed away by the flood water, was found dead today on a sandbar of River Brahmaputra in Assam's Nalbari district.
The rhino was found by the locals in remote Charaimari sandbar under Bhagnamari police station of the district this morning, Nalbari Superintendent of Police Abu Sufian said here.
The horn of the rhino was intact and it was suspected to have been washed away by the currents of the flooded Brahmaputra, he said.
Senior police and forest personnel have rushed to the spot and further details are awaited, he added.
With this, the death toll of rhinos due to poaching and flood has risen to 40 which includes eleven by poachers and 29 due to floods during this year.
Another rhino, which strayed due to floods and was stranded in the sandbars of Rani Chapori in Kamrup(Rural) district for more than a week, was rescued yesterday and sent to the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati.
