Organizers of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have hired a new chief operating officer.

Marco Aurelio Costa Vieira, a former military officer, replaces Roderlei Generali, who was fired last month.

Rio organizing committee head Carlos Arthur Nuzman says Costa Vieira "brings with him a wealth of multi-disciplined, large-scale management experience."

He will be responsible for relations with national Olympic committees, the athletes village, venues, opening and closing ceremonies, accommodation, transportation, security and technology.

Costa Vieira will join the Rio delegation attending the London Games.

Rio is preparing to host the first Olympics in South America.
