Thane (Maharashtra), June 12 (IANS) Republican Party of India (RPI) workers continued their agitation here for the second consecutive day Tuesday to press for their demand to hand over the 12.5-acre Indu Mills land in central Mumbai for Dr.B.R. Ambedkar's memorial.

Over 500 party workers took to streets and held 'rail roko' agitations at Ambernath, Ulhasnagar and Dombivali railway stations in Thane district, adjoining Mumbai.

The agitation led to disruption of train services for about 30 minutes. Police later detained several protestors, officials said.

Over 100 workers also blocked traffic on the Eastern Express Highway near here and shouted slogans for handing over the mill land, located in Dadar, to the RPI.

The Maharashtra government proposed to build a memorial near Chaityabhoomi, Ambedkar's final resting place in Dadar. After agitations in Mumbai late last year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh granted in-principle approval for the land transfer.

The National Textile Corporation which owns the Indu Mills is yet to hand over the 12.5-acre plot for the memorial.

'We will continue to agitate till the government ensures transfer of land for the memorial. The government is delaying the transfer and making false promises,' RPI spokesperson Mayur Borkar told IANS.
