Dumdum (West Bengal), April 23 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said his government has given a Rs. 135 crore special grant for modernisation of Kolkata's four premier institutes of culture and learning to help the city's 'cultural development'.

'For the modernisation of Asiatic Society, National Library, Indian Museum and Victoria Memorial, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has given a Rs.135 crore special grant,' said the prime minister, who was in the state to campaign for the Congress-Trinamool Congress alliance.

'We hope this will largely help in the cultural development of Kolkata,' he said.

'We want to see the best of drama, cinema and literature from Bengal and for that we will do whatever we can,' he added.

The prime minister also said that the UPA government has also given a special grant of Rs.95 crore to the state for upgrading the Vishwa Bharati University, and promised that if the alliance was voted to power it will endeavour to bring back the lost glory of the Presidency College.
