Rs 32 lakh fine recovered from defaulters for power theft

Nagpur: Local franchise Spanco which runs power distribution in three zones of Gandhibagh, Mahal and Civil lines in Nagpur has launched a drive against power theft and recovered Rs 32 lakh as fine from defaulters.

The sum was recovered after a vigilance team raided 273 premises of consumers in Bhagvan Nagar, Wardhaman Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Nara, Sutgirni, Itwari, Jaripatka, Bagadganj, Indora Zopda, Mankapur, Katol Road & Civil lines.

The power company is conducting meter testing, connected load testing, faulty and stopped meter testing, direct hooking, checks on meter tampering and any other mode of unauthorised usage of electricity.

In last couple of weeks, around 273 power connections were tested by Spanco vigilance team, which found 48 meters tampered.

All the 48 cases were booked U/S 135 and 138 of Electricity Act 2003 amounting to dishonest abstraction of electricity.

The total assessment was made to the tune of Rs 32,38,952 with stolen units assessed 1,70,220 and connected load of 129.789 KW.

It has already filed FIR in 16 cases this month and initiated legal proceedings in other such cases and planning to obtain warrants against them for offence of power theft , a company release said today.
