Bellary: A Regional Transport Officer was today thrashed by a crowd led by a Kannada outfit before being handed over to the police for allegedly harassing a 25-year-old woman and making advances to her, police said.
RTO Inspector Manjunath has been taken into custody for inquiry into the allegations made by the victim, police said.
As the news spread, family members of the victim and Kannada Rakshana Vedike members confronted Manjunath in his office and thrashed him, police said.
Speaking to reporters, the woman alleged that Manjunath had asked for her mobile number when she visited the office to begin the process of vehicle registration.
"I gave him my mobile number to update me on the registration process," she said.
But then he called her on the mobile and made lewd comments, the woman alleged.
Enraged over Manjunath's misbehaviour, the woman said she complained to her family members, who along with KRS activists, thrashed the RTO.
Manjunath, however, said he has not made any lewd comments.
A case has been registered.
