Dhaka: Russia Sunday submitted a proposal to the Bangladeshi government to build a nuclear power plant in the country, the Russian ambassador here said.

The proposal was formally submitted to Bangladesh's Science Minister Yeafesh Osman. The nuclear plant will help to meet the country's growing demand for energy, the private UNB news agency quoted Russian envoy Gennady P Trotsenko as saying.

Russia is making endeavours to assist Bangladesh to construct a nuclear plant to meet the energy needs in the South Asian country, Trotsenko said after meeting the Bangladeshi minister.

He said a Russian team would soon come here to discuss the issue with concerned authorities.

Osman told reporters that the government would study the Russian proposal.

Media reports earlier said Russia has proposed to construct a 1,000-megawatt nuclear power station in Bangladesh.

Currently, the country generates around 3,500 MW of electricity against the demand of 5,000 MW.
