Thane: A senior Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) police officer committed suicide on Saturday at a restaurant here.
Police said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sanjay Banerjee shot himself dead at around 4 p.m. this evening.
The officer had gone for lunch to the Goa Portuguesa restaurant with his family.
The reason for the suicide is being ascertained, even as Banerjee's body has been sent to the Thane Civil Hospital for a post-mortem.
Banerjee has been with the Maharashtra ATS since June last year.
The officer shot himself with his own service weapon, police said.
According to an ATS officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Banerjee fired a couple of rounds from his revolver into himself. However, the official refused to divulge more information as to where he shot himself or if he left a suicide note.
Banerjee was attached with the technical cell of the ATS since a year.
According to the official, the reason for the suicide was not yet known. The body has been sent for a post-mortem, following which a clear picture might emerge, the official said.
