Former MP Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday was appointed as the new president of the Assam unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), party officials said.
Sonowal will succeed Ranjit Dutta, who resigned from the post last month.
"Before the panchayat poll in Assam, which will be held on January next year, it is a major charge for me to usher success for the party," Sonowal said.
On the illegal immigration issue, the new Assam BJP president said that the party will continue to raise its voice to protect the interests of the bona fide citizens.
"There is no land for the illegal Bangladeshis in Assam," Sonowal said.
