Suspected militants gunned down a village sarpanch in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Sunday, police said on Monday.
38-year-old Mohammad Shafi Teli, who was the Deputy Sarpanch of Nowpora Jageer area in the district, was gunned down by suspected militants outside his residence at Nowpora village.
The incident occurred at around 8:15 pm when Teli was returning home.
He was taken to a hospital in Srinagar city where he succumbed to the injuries, the police said.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
Earlier on Sept 10, a sarpanch of Jammu and Kashmir´s ruling National Conference party was shot dead in North Kashmir´s Palhalan area of Pattan.
Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo, son of Abdul Karim, a sarpanch from Palhalan Block ´C´ was coming out from the mosque when gunmen fired upon him from a close range.
Yatoo died on the spot though he was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Yatoo was a retired transport employee who had successfully contested the Panchayat Elections in Palhalan Block.
