SC dismisses rape charge against Rahul

Giving a clean chit to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a case of alleged rape and abduction against the leader on Thursday.

The apex court dismissed former Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Kishore Samrite´s petition in connection to the matter and directed him to pay Rs. 5 lakh as fine to Gandhi for damaging his reputation.

The court also asked him to pay a fine of Rs. 5 lakh to the girl and her parents as compensation.

An apex court bench of Justice BS Chauhan and Justice Swatanter Kumar said the allegation made against Gandhi was without ´substance´ and ´an iota of evidence´.

It said the reputation of Gandhi was damaged by the ´undesirable act of the petitioner ´.

The court said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against the ex-SP MLA will continue.

The apex court gave its order on Thursday on the basis of an appeal filed Samrite challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court on the same case.

Based on a website report that alleged that Gandhi along with six friends gangraped and illegally detained a woman in north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in 2006, the former SP MLA had made the allegations and moved the habeas corpus petition in the High Court.

The Allahabad High Court had earlier dismissed Samrite´s petition and imposed a cost of Rs. 50 lakh on him.

The court had also ordered a CBI probe against Samrite.
