New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday warned it will halt the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu if safety concerns about it are not addressed, TV channels reported. The central government told the court the Kudankulam plant can bear the impact of an earthquake like which hit Fukushima in Japan last year.
Nearly 3,000 protesters demonstrated on Saturday against the loading of nuclear fuel in the first unit of the Russian-built reactor, about 700 kilometers south of Chennai. Construction of the plant has been delayed by protests by residents and anti-nuclear groups in the past year concerned about safety.
The government says the plant will meet safety standards.
