New Delhi: Home Minister Shivraj Patil, facing widespread criticism following the terror attacks in Mumbai, on Sunday submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Ministry sources said.
Patil has taken moral responsibility for the Mumbai blasts.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accepted the resignation of Patil.
Finance Minister P Chidamabarm was given additional charge of the Home Ministry.
Mumbai terror attack special A Rashtrapati Bhawan communiquÃ© announced the appointment of Chidambaram as Home Minister after acceptance of Patil's resignation.
It said the Prime Minister would hold the additional charge of Finance.
Patil offered to quit at the Congress Working Committee meeting on Saturday night, party sources said on Sunday.
Patil told the meeting that as the Home Minister, he "takes the responsibility and whatever the CWC decides, I am ready to do," they said.
