A South Korean lawmaker says a former party leader offered him an envelope of cash to buy his vote in an internal party election in 2008.

The office of Koh Seung-duk said Monday the lawmaker made the statement as part of efforts to end rampant corruption in South Korean politics.

It's rare for a South Korean politician to reveal bribery attempts.

Koh's office says he turned down the 3 million won ($2,590) in cash but didn't disclose exactly who offered the money.

South Korean media quoted Koh as telling prosecutors Sunday that he was offered the money by current National Assembly Speaker Park Hee-tae.

Park's office has denied the allegation.
