CBI arrest Kalmadi; telecoms case widens

New Delhi: An unidentified man on Tuesday flung a slipper at former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi as he was entering the Patiala House court premises.

Kalmadi, who was arrested Monday by Central Bureau of Investigation for alleged financial irregularities in the granting of contracts for the October 2010 sporting event, spent the night in CBI lockup.

As the Congress MP was walking to the court, a man, later identified as Kapil Thakur, first tried to break the police cordon and, when he failed, chucked a slipper.

Kalmadi looked a bit taken aback, but was immediately rushed into the courtroom by escorting policemen.

Thakur, wearing a T-shirt, was whisked away to the Tilak Marg police station. Police officials said they were questioning him. "He is unemployed and belongs to Madhya Pradesh," the official said.
