Hitting the campaign trail in Gujarat on Friday, Congress president Sonia Gandhi launched an attack on Chief Minister Narendra Modi saying his government does not care for the poor and adivasis and no one knows where the developmental funds from the centre were spent.

The Congress supremo and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson, who addressed two rallies in south Gujarat, said at Mandvi, UPA gave thousands of crores of loans to every state including Gujarat "but we do not know where it was spent."

"Congress always saw everyone as equal. But the Gujarat government has no concern for the poor," she said.

She said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state is making hollow promises and there was no improvement in the living standard of adivasi (indigenous people) despite tall promises.

She said the BJP governments at centre and state did nothing to improve the life of forest and tribal people and did not pass any bill during their tenure that benefits these people though the same was drafted during the time of Congress.

Sonia said her late husband Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister had worked towards development of Gujarat and the Congress government had constructed a six-lane national highway.

Voting at the places where Sonia Gandhi addressed her rallies is taking place on Dec 13.

Sonia Gandhi last spoke at a rally in Gujarat in Rajkot last month.

Sonia´s Friday rallies come a day after top Congress leader Narhari Amin joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi welcomed the former deputy chief minister to the party on Thursday morning.

"Shri Narhari Amin´s joining BJP strengthens democracy and destroys dynastic politics - a momentous event in Guj(arat) politics," said Modi on micro-blogging site Twitter.

A number of Amin supporters also quit the Congress.

Amin, who had been with the Congress for 25 years, left the party last week after he was not given a ticket to contest in the Assembly polls in December.

Gujarat will vote in two phases on December 13 and 17.

The results will be declared on December 20.
