External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Wednesday said the decision of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to abstain from voting on the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail in the Lok Sabha should not be seen as a conspiracy.

"They (BJP) are showing the number that how much people have opposed the FDI, but they also see how much people have supported us by abstentions," said Khurshid.

"They (SP and BSP) might have some problems in convincing their people in their respective areas, we should respect their stand. It should not be seen as any conspiracy," he added.

Commenting on the UPA Government's win on FDI vote, senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said 'this is a victory for the CBI'.

"The opposition is successful in terms of proposal, because the 18-19 parties, which participated in the debate, opposed FDI, but two of them abstained at the time of voting, the government might have managed them. It may be called that this is a victory for CBI, defeat for FDI," he said.

The motion moved by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, against FDI in retail was defeated in the lower house by a margin of 35 votes. 218 members voted in favour of the motion, while 253 voted against.

The Samajwadi Party's 21 MPs and Bahujan Samaj Party's 22 MPs abstained from voting on the FDI issue. (ANI)
