Mumbai, Oct 6 (IBNS) Veteran actress Sridevi's comeback film 'English Vinglish' got good reviews from critics though it had a low opening response at the box office on the first day.
´English Vinglish´ was released on Friday and the premiere of the film was a grand event.
Celebrities of B-town attended the event and wished her all the luck.
The guest list included Amitabh & Jaya Bachchan, Dr Shriram Nene & Madhuri Dixit, Yash Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Tabu, Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha and Kangana Ranaut among others.
The film registered an average of 15-20% occupancy on the first day thought it did slightly better in multiplexes.
´English Vinglish´, however, was well-received by critics.
Meena Iyer from Times Of India said, "Easily one of the best films on 2012; is tale of women empowerment because it strikes a chord, right from the start to the end titles."
Praising the film, Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama said, "On the whole, English Vinglish is a remarkable motion picture. It´s amusing, emotional, heartrending and also insightful. An inspiring film with an overwhelming message."
Earlier this month, at the screening of English Vinglish at the Toronto International Film Festival, the movie received a standing ovation by the global audience present there.
English Vinglish is a story of Shashi, a woman who struggles to learn the English language and overcome the insecurities she faces in the foreign land.
The film is shot mostly in New York and captures her transformational journey.
Directed by debutant director Gauri Shinde, English Vinglish is distributed by Eros International.
