State funeral for Karunanidhi, Centre declares day of national mourning

New Delhi: The central government has decided to accord state funeral to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam patriarch M Karunanidhi, ministry of home affairs said on Tuesday night.

National flag to fly at half-mast on Wednesday in Delhi, all state capitals and across Tamil Nadu as a mark of respect to Karunanidhi.

A day of national mourning has been declared for Wednesday.

Tamil media reports that petrol pumps will be shut from 6 am to 6 pm on Wednesday in Chennai.

M Karunanidhi's body will be first taken to daughter Kanimozhi's residence in CIT Colony from the Kauvery Hospital, then to the Gopalapuram residence.

From there the DMK chief's remains will be kept at the Rajaji Hall for the public to pay their last respects.

It is learnt that PM Modi will go to Chennai on Wednesday to pay his last respects.

Telangana CM KCR, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal will also be flying to Chennai on Wednesday to pay their respects.
