Malappuram: A statue of writer and cartoonist OV Vijayan at the Smrithi Vanam Memorial in Raja's High School, Kottakkal, was found vandalised.

The nose of the statue has been chopped off.

The statue was set up at Smirthi Vanam at Vijayan's former school last week. The memorial comprises Vijayan's statue, the characters and places from the novel Kasakinte Ithihasam , seating arrangements for as many as 100 students and a cartoon board.

The local municipality, led by the Muslim League, was against installing the statue in the school and a bitter row had ensued between the CPM and League leaders.

The League-led Municipality complained that the statue was set up without prior permission.

Abdusamad Samadani, MP of the area, finally intervened and arrived at a consensus with the municipality to set up the memorial.
