Steps taken to ensure free, fair and transparent polls

Puducherry:  Election authorities have initiated necessary steps for the conduct of free, fair and transparent assembly polls in the Union Territory on April 13, District Election Officer G Ragesh Chandra said today.

The 'election machinery is ready to conduct the polls. All Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers have been appointed and they were given training for the conduct of the polls', he told reporters here.

Puducherry assembly has 30 seats spread over Puducherry (23), Karaikal (five) Mahe and Yanam one each.

Police department has also been geared to provide assistance to the election machinery, he said.

He said all the 8,05,545 voters have been issued Electoral Photo Identity Cards.

Special teams have been set up to curb 'menace of money power and to monitor election expenditure of candidates', he said, adding, video surveillance teams were being formed for each assembly constituency.

Separate Accounting teams were being set up for each constituencies to keep a tab on election accounts submitted by the candidates, he said.

Superintendent of Police Anto Alphonse said Election Commission had allotted 15 companies of Central para military force to the Union Territory. Vulnerable booths would be identified as per guidelines of the EC, he said.
