Chennai: A 28-year-old woman studying in Canada was arrested Monday in Tuticorin and sent to judicial custody for 15 days after she shouted “fascist BJP government down, down” on board a flight in the presence of Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan who filed a complaint.

Lois Sofia, on her way home from Canada, was with her parents who joined her at Chennai for the IndiGo flight to Tuticorin. The incident took place after the flight landed at the Tuticorin airport.

A senior police officer said Sofia was taken into custody after Tamilisai filed a complaint with the airport police.

Soundararajan also lodged a complaint and the lady was later detained for interrogation.

Talking to media on the issue, Soundararajan said that the detained passenger could belong to some organisation.

"A middle-aged lady on seeing me started raising anti-BJP slogans and even followed up to the arrival gate. Her appearance looked threatening; I feel some organisation is behind her," Soundararajan said.

E Athisayakumar, a lawyer appearing for Sofia, said she had been arrested and sent to judicial custody for 15 days. She was later taken to hospital following complaints of stomach ache.

Lois Sofia, who had been involved in writing articles seeking the closure of Vedanta Ltd-owned Sterlite Copper, was later granted bail.

The police had registered an FIR under two sections of the TN Police Act and the Indian Penal Code for causing public nuisance. She was produced before a judge, who remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
