Super Virat helps India thrash Pakistan

Virat Kohli hit another half century to help India defeat arch rival Pakistan by eight wickets in a high-voltage Super Eights stage match of the ICC World Twenty20 at the R Premadasa Stadium here on Sunday.

India also kept their chances to move to the semi-final round of the tournament with the win.

Chasing, 129 for victory, India reached the target by losing only two wickets and 18 balls to spare.

Regular openers- Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir- opened the innings for India on Sunday after experimenting with all-rounder Irfan Pathan in the past couple of matches.



India found themselves in troubles after they lost the wicket of opener Gambhir (0) in the first over of the innings.

Sehwag and Kohli then steadied the innings as both added 74 runs in the second wicket partnership.

Virat Kohli remained the top scorer for India with his 78 runs from 61 deliveries. He hit nine boundaries and two sixes and remained not out till the end.

Sehwag scored 29 runs from 24 deliveries before he got out in the 11th over of the match.

Shahid Afridi picked up Sehwag´s wicket as he tried to hit over the ropes. Umar Gul picked up the catch as Sehwag returned to the pavilion with India standing at 75 runs for the loss of two wickets.

Kohli and Yuvraj Singh (19*) added 54 runs in the third wicket partnership and helped India beat the neighbouring country in the crucial encounter.

Shahid Afridi and Raza Hasan picked up one wicket each for Pakistan.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first.

Pakistan were all out at 128 runs in 19.4 overs.

Shoaib Malik remained the top scorer for the side with his 28 runs.

Pakistan received early jolts as they lost the wickets of Imran Nazir (8), Shahid Afridi (14) , Nasir Jamshed (4) and Kamran Akmal (5) inside 50 runs.

Skipper Mohammad Hafeez scored 15 runs in the match.

Malik and Umar Akmal (21) added 47 crucial runs in the sixth wicket partnership.

Lakshmipathy Balaji scalped three wickets for India.

Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh scalped two wickets each in the match.

Irfan Pathan and Virat Kohli picked up a wicket for India.
