The Supreme Court on Monday stayed for now the death sentence of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist responsible for the November 2008 attack on Mumbai.

Reports said the death sentence is stayed till the petition filed by the amicus curie in the case is heard. Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said the court action is a routine exercise on the appeal of Kasab.

Kasab had appealed to the Supreme Court asking for his death sentence to be overturned.

Kasab has been lodged in a Mumbai jail since being captured following the attacks that left 166 people dead and over 300 injured.

He had been convicted and sentenced to death by a trial court court in Mumbai and later by the Bombay High Court in February this year.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, 23, was one of the ten Pakistan-based militants who launched coordinated strikes in vital places of India´s financial capital including two luxury hotels on November 26, 2008.
