Dharmarajan, a lawyer who was convicted in the 1996 Suryanelli case in which a 16-year-old girl was raped by scores of men for days, was produced in a Kottayam court Saturday after his arrest in Karnataka the day before.
On the run since 2005, the arrest of Dharmarajan is crucial in the case which has again dragged present Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha PJ Kurien into it after the victim said he was one of the men who raped her.
Dharmarajan was arrested by Kerala Police from Sagar in Karnataka.
Dharmarajan has alleged that Kurien was involved in the gang-rape as claimed by the victim.
The rape victim in her letter on Jan 29 said Kurien along with other accused in the case had raped her in the Kumily panchayat guest house in Kerala.
The Supreme Court however had cleared him in the case.
The Suryanelli rape case is concerned with a 16-year-old girl who was raped by 42 men for 40 days in 1996 in the state.
