Whistleblower of the 2002 Gujarat riots and suspended cop Sanjeev Bhatt has slammed the state government for failing to protect him despite threats made to his life.

"When it was the state's own assessment that my life was being threatened, even we know what kind of threat I was facing and from where it was emanating.

If the state is not performing its duties, then it is our responsibility to put things on the record. We need to remind the state of its duties," Bhatt told the media here.

"They (government) have not taken any steps despite threats emanating from there. What can we say when there is a threat and we have to ask for protection from the state," said Bhatt.

On the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which cleared Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who was accused of preventing assistance to the victims, Bhatt said: "The people of the country know whether a clean chit should be given or not, what role was played by whom. This has not been hidden from anyone."

"The deal is how to get all the facts on record and wait for what the court decides, but the truth is not hidden from anyone, neither in Gujarat nor the entire country," he added.

A designated court on Wednesday asked the SIT to handover its report to the complainants within a month's time. The move comes as a major victory for victims of the communal clashes. (ANI)
