The Swiss government says it wants to buy 22 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden's Saab AB to replace a fleet of Northrop F-5 Tigers.

Switzerland's defense minister announced Wednesday that a 3.1 billion francs ($3.37 billion) order for the Gripens would be placed, pending approval from the Swiss parliament.

Ueli Maurer said the planes are to replace the Northrop F-5 Tigers.

The Swiss Cabinet said cost was a factor in its decision to opt for the Gripen fighter over the Rafale fighter, produced by French company Dassault Aviation, and Eurofighters built by a European consortium.
