At least ten people, including police personnel, were injured in a clash between protesters and police in Assam's Kamrup (Rural) district on Saturday, officials said.

On Saturday, local people and traders protested and alleged at Sualkuchi in Lower Assam district silk thread and cloths are being brought in from other parts of the country, thus affecting the local silk industry.

As a mark of their protest, the local people reportedly burnt imported silk cloths worth of Rs 35 lakh.

"Protesters brought imported silk cloths from several shops and tried to set them ablaze, which triggered a clash between local people and shop owners," a top police official said.

"For controlling the situation, when police had tried to prevent the angry people from burning cloths, they pelted stones on security personnel and forced them to baton charge and fire in the air," the cop said.

At least ten people, including security personnel, were injured during the clash between police and local people.

Additional security forces were rushed to the area for controlling the situation.

Meanwhile, local people alleged that some traders are selling imported silk thread and cloths in the name of Sualkuchi paat-muga fabrics, which are affecting the Assamese unique golden muga silk and paat silk industry.
