Thane building collapse: Builders arrested

Two real-estate developers, who illegally constructed a seven-storey building that collapsed in Mumbai's Thane suburb killing at least 72 people, were arrested on Saturday, said police.

The two builders were identified as Jamil Qureshi and Salim Sheikh.

The police arrested Qureshi from north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh while the other one was apprehended from Thane.

The police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the real-estate developers, reports said.

Both Qureshi and Sheikh were on the run since the incident happened on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the seven-storey building collapse on Thursday at Mumbai´s Thane suburb rose to 72 on Saturday, officials said.

Rescue workers on Saturday pulled out more bodies out of the debris of the building.

Officials said among the dead are several children- nine boys and 13 girls.

More than 60 people were reportedly injured while many were said to be still missing as rescue workers continued to cut through the mangled steel and concrete remains of the illegal building.

The seriously injured were shifted to JJ Hospital and Sion Hospital here.
