New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) Three people were arrested for duping several people from Bihar, Bengal and Haryana on the pretext of providing them jobs, using a fake website of the Indian Railways Recruitment Board, police said Sunday.
Sagar Saxena (32), Pravin Kumar (24) and Virender Sharma (29) were arrested Sunday from their homes in south and west Delhi.
Following an investigation into a complaint lodged Sep 12 at Muzaffarpur in Bihar by the Railway Recruitment Board, the case was handed over to Delhi Police.
"The accused revealed that they operated in connivance with one Manish, currently residing in West Bengal. Manish created the fake website, www.irrb.org/muzaffarpur, imitating the site of the Indian Railway's Recruitment Board, Muzaffarpur, Bihar," said a police officer.
The men uploaded the roll numbers of people who had qualified for recruitment from the original website, and showed the candidates whom they duped as qualified ones.
"They contacted candidates pretending to be railways officials, and collected money from them to provide jobs," said a police officer.
"An amount between Rs.one lakh and Rs.1.5 lakh was charged from each candidate for jobs in the groups C and D categories of Indian Railways," the officer said.
The officer said that while Saxena designed and hosted the fake website, Kumar arranged for the domain name and the hosting of the space for the server. Sharma picked up names and roll numbers of the aspirants, on directions from the absconding accused, Manish.
Manish collected money from the candidates and the booty was distributed between the accused. Police estimate that nearly 400 people from Bihar, Bengal and Haryana fell prey to this scam.
Saxena, who received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Allahabad University, Uttar Pradesh, worked with a Nehru Place-based software company as a website developer.
Kumar, enrolled in a correspondence course at Delhi University, is an expert in graphic design and works with a private firm designing websites, while Sharma, an MBA, works as a property dealer.
