Kotdwara: A young tigress was found dead in the Tarai West Forest Division near Corbett National Park, with forest officials terming her death as 'unnatural'.

The tigress was found dead on the banks of river Dabaka last morning in the N-1 Block of Gabua beat in Bail Paraw Range of Tarai west.

Prima facie evidence suggests that death of the tigress was unnatural, Nishant Varma, Divisional Forest Officer, Tarai west region said.

A postmortem conducted by a panel of three doctors revealed that the death was caused by injuries.

Although some forest officials claim that the tigress might have died of a motor accident, Rajeev Singh, one of the doctors who conducted the postmortem, said that there were a lot of injuries on the body of the tigress, which could have led to her death.

Eye-witnesses said there were many injuries on the neck of the tigress, adding that the bone of her left hind leg was broken and skin ruptured in many places that indicates the tigress was first trapped and then beaten to death.

Vital organs and viscera of the tigress have been sent to two specialised laboratories of Indian Veterinary Research Institute (Bareilly) and Indian Wildlife Institute (Dehradun) for further forensic examination.
